So how do we enjoy our food and not have to buy a new, larger wardrobe every 6 months? Especially if we're not into going to the gym? (I don't). There are 2 strategies I've put to use that have helped me. Maybe you'll find them useful too.
First of all, I do my best to eat mindfully. What do I mean by that? I mean that when I put a forkful of food into my mouth, I don't automatically follow it with another one. Not right away, anyway. I mean, I've just put some food in my mouth - right? So why would I need to put more of what I already have into my mouth? How about taking a little time to chew? And not just chomp down a couple of times before sending it down -- I mean really chew. I try to take the time to savor what I have in my mouth - to chew it fully and completely. This isn't always easy, especially when we're eating with others and carrying on a conversation. It's easy to get lost in the conversation and not notice what we've just put into our mouths.
But I find that when I slow down, pay attention to the food, and chew it well, two things happen. First of all, it tastes better. Or at least I notice how it tastes! And second - and this is key - it takes longer to eat. And the longer it takes to eat, the less I eat. How come? Because the body starts to feel full about 20 minutes after we start to eat. So if I eat slowly, mindfully, I will not have put as much food into my system before I start to feel full. This is my first trick to curbing the weight gain.
The second one is the fact that I enjoy walking. I often walk to the grocery store, and on the way home those grocery bags are my "weights". If I'm going to the movies and it's one flight up or down, I walk. I walk through Balboa Park, and on the weekends it's filled with people from all over the world, as well as musicians and tarot readers and jugglers. And it's free.
So if you're like me and enjoy eating, try these tricks and see if they work for you. I'd love to hear it if they do! And if you've got other strategies that work for you - please share!!
