In my world, I think of healing as returning to our true nature - the nature of our mind, which is ignited by curiosity. The true nature of our bodies, which were born to operate in such a way that all of our cells, tissues and organs function in harmony. And the nature of our spirit, which sees no separation - only the connection between all beings.
So what is the benefit of using drugs, surgery, acupuncture, chiropractic care and/or sound healing? I would say that there is a place of all medical modalities, including all of the above plus meditation and prayer. It depends on what the imbalances are that we are facing. For the majority of all the reasons why people seek medical help, approximately 70% of the time the condition will improve without any intervention whatsoever. Which means that all kinds of medicine - whether considered to be mainstream or alternative - all of them are really dealing with the 30% that actually need some kind of intervention in order to improve. All of the rest of medicine is dealing with symptoms which would eventually go away on their own.
Think about that the next time you feel unwell. Does it make sense to you to run for an antibiotic? Or if you're dealing with uncomfortable symptoms, are the so-called alternative medicines a better option because their side effects tend to be positive rather than harsh?
